Jim Woods & Matt Coelho
Jim Woods planted the seeds of Woods Beer Company in 2006, when he created MateVeza, a line of craft beers brewed with yerba mate. After years of distributing MateVeza in five states to stores including Whole Foods and BevMo, Woods co-founded Cerveceria, a brewpub adjacent to San Francisco’s Dolores Park, in 2012. On the heels of the first location’s success, Woods opened Woods Polk Station in San Francisco and Woods Bar & Brewery in Oakland under the Woods Beer Company umbrella. At all three locations, Woods Beer Co. serves up adventurous beers for curious drinkers.
Matt Coelho is a Certified Cicerone and licensed Professional Engineer with over five years experience permitting and expediting both commercial and residential projects in the Bay Area. After leaving the 9 to 5 desk behind for points abroad in 2009, Matt spent a few years learning the beer trade while bartending at Church Key and City Beer Store. Matt then circled back on his training in the building trades by pulling the permits for such projects as the City Beer expansion and the locations in the WOODS Beer Co. family. With experience at each level from service, brewing, building and permitting, Matt brings a rare blend of perspective and is familiar with navigating the different bureaucratic agencies that have a say in a potential new business, from the ABC to the Planning Department. He will go over how permitting, zoning, architectural and structural implications are often overlooked by prospective business owners when looking for locations and how many times a lease is signed without knowing the hidden pitfalls of a particular building that are obvious to an architect, engineer or contractor. By stressing the importance of retaining an experienced design professional, he will help you avoid potential delays or additional construction that can cost tens, even hundreds, of thousands of dollars in unanticipated expense.
